I like to think I bring a new sort of perspective on living a healthy lifestyle, hopefully with some humor 
I read that back in 2007 you lost 85 pounds and you?ve kept it off. What has been the best thing to help keep the weight off??
Yeah, right, that?s like a couple of toddlers or something?? I started by just going to Weight Watchers with my mom (who also lost 50 pounds, she?s such a hot tamale) and basically relearning how to eat?which I?m sure sounds weird.? I think the best thing for me has been tracking my food, whether that be on an online calorie tracker, snapping pics of what what I eat, or even jotting it down on a post-it?it really keeps you accountable.? It?s really not as time consuming as some people would lead you to believe?and it works.
Since I?ve started to run, I?ve been burning off a ridiculous amount of calories, and haven?t had to keep such a watchful eye over my calories intake, because?it?s tough to get enough in some days, honestly.?But, even still, I?m always mindful of what kind of food I?m getting in my body.
Have you always been a runner or did you just get started?
No way, haha?in hindsight, I wish I had been! I started when we bought a house in a nice neighborhood in July, I felt compelled to get out on the streets.? So, I laced up and off I went.? I started really getting addicted in August?where I logged 29 miles, In September 60 miles, and then in October 90 miles!? Goal for November?100, seems doable after last month!
I see you?re signed up for a Turkey Trot 5 miler from our Fall Fun Run event. Have you ran a race before? ?
Ran/walked a 5k back in 2009 with my mother and sister in Manchester, NH?and I wasn?t really taking it too seriously then.
This month I have a 5k scheduled on 11/10/12 for RunForRovers.org , then the Turkey Trot!? Totally excited?I want to find some funky themed knee socks for the runs!
I also see that you?re signed up for your first half marathon in January. What are you doing to train??
Yes, and as we speak I just signed up for another at Disney World in February!
Generally, I am following the Hal Higdon 13.1 training schedule?but I tend to add an additional short run each week, I?d like to keep my rest days to two a week.? The mileage increments are going great, and I?m always pumped to see how I do on my long runs each Saturday.? I try to do some strength and stretching on my running rest days?always feels great to get things stretched and loose (that?s what she said.)
Also, my training included figuring on my on-the-run nutrition?I?ve tried all the big names?Gu, Sports beans, Shot Bloks?and honestly, the best in-run fuel has turned out to be Swedish Fish!
What is a go to meal for you when you?re in the zone and training??
Before my long runs, I try to eat a big ol? bowl of pasta (original, right?but I?m Sicilian, so this is easy, and my favorite
So far, this has been the best combo for endurance/long runs in my book!

Plants lack muscles, yet in only a tenth of a second, the meat-eating Venus fly trap hydrodynamically snaps its leaves shut to trap an insect meal. This astonishingly rapid display of botanical movement has long fascinated biologists. Commercially, understanding the mechanism of the Venus fly trap's leaf snapping may one day help improve products such as release-on-command coatings and adhesives, electronic circuits, optical lenses, and drug delivery.
Now a team of French physicists from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France, is working to understand this movement. They will present their findings at 65th meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD), Nov. 18 20, 2012, in San Diego, Calif.
The work extends findings by Dr. Yol Forterre and researchers from Harvard University who discovered several years ago that the curvature of the Venus fly-trap's leaf changes while closing due to a snap-buckling instability in the leaf structure related to the shell-like geometry of the leaves. Mathieu Colombani, Ph.D. student in Forterre's laboratory is now conducting experiments to elucidate the physical mechanisms behind this movement. "The extremely high pressure inside the Venus fly trap cells prompted us to suspect that changes with a cell's pressure regime could be a key component driving this rapid leaf movement," he notes.
The Colombai team uses a microfluidic pressure probe to target and measure individual cells. This is a tricky experiment because it requires the living plant to be immobilized with dental silicone paste while the probe is inserted using a micromanipulator guided by binoculars. They take pressure measurements before and after leaf closure. They also measure cell wall elasticity by injecting or removing a known amount of liquid and recording the cellular responses, as well as take other measurements. "By measuring osmotic pressure and elasticity of leaf cells we hope to come closer to explaining the snapping mechanism,'' Colombani explains.

Family of murder victim Cukor files suit against Berkeley | Berkeleyside

The family of Peter Cukor, killed by a mentally disturbed man outside his Berkeley hills home on February 18, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Thursday against the city.
R. Lewis Van Blois, the Cukor family attorney, charged in the lawsuit that the city and police acted grossly negligently in their handling of Cukor murder. At the core of the case is the issue of how seriously police took Cukor?s call and how promptly officers responded.
?Peter Cukor had called the Berkeley Police Department on their emergency number for help to request a police officer be sent to their home right away because the intruder was attempting to get inside the Cukor home and was acting strangely,? Van Blois said in a press release. ?The police dispatcher promised to get someone to their home soon and the Cukors relied on this representation. In fact, the Berkeley Police Dispatcher never intended nor requested a police officer to respond and when a police officer called to say he could respond to the call, he was told not to go. Soon thereafter, the intruder attacked Peter Cukor and fatally struck him on the head with a flower pot.?
Berkeley Police Chief Michael Meehan has previously defended his department?s actions, saying that officers responded in a timely fashion.
The suit asks for unspecified damages for emotional distress for Cukor?s wife, Andrea Cukor.
?His wife witnessed everything,? said Van Blois. ?She heard everything. She saw him get dragged down and struck. She watched him kill her husband. If you can imagine watching your husband get killed right before your eyes and hearing and seeing it, it?s devastating.?

Cukor, 67, and his wife returned to their 2 Park Gate Road home around 8:45 p.m. on Feb. 18 and encountered Daniel DeWitt, who told them he was looking for a ?Zoey? he said he believed lived there. DeWitt is schizophrenic and had stopped taking his medications. Cukor told DeWitt to leave, and entered the house where he called Berkeley police at 981-5911 from his cell phone to report the intruder.
Since Cukor spoke in a calm voice and called on the police ?non-emergency number,? the police dispatcher determined it was a Priority 2 call, which must be responded to within 20 minutes, rather than a Priority 1 call which means there is a crime in progress or life threatening emergency and gets immediate response, according to statements made by Berkeley police officials after the murder.
But the police were in the middle of a shift change and were anticipating trouble from an Occupy march that was scheduled to go from Oakland to UC Berkeley that night. Top police officials wanted to brief the incoming officers on the march and ordered that no Priority 2 calls get answered.
One police officer allegedly called in to dispatch and offered to take any calls, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and the lawsuit. He was told not to respond.
The lawsuit charges that this diversion was negligent. Meehan has said that there were other Priority 2 calls in the hopper at the time, and there is no guarantee that the officer would have been sent to the Cukor home, which was two miles from the officer, who was at Shattuck and Cedar. The officer might have been sent to the other pending Priority 2 calls, which included a fire and another suspicious person, because they were closer, said Meehan.
Regardless, Berkeley police did not dispatch any officers to the Cukor home after that first call. But Peter Cukor thought the police were coming and was concerned they couldn?t find his driveway since it is in a remote spot, according to the lawsuit. So he walked back out to his driveway to try to get the police?s attention, according to the lawsuit. He once again encountered DeWitt, who attacked him.
Andrea Cukor then called 911 to report that the intruder was beating her husband. Police responded immediately and arrested DeWitt a short time later. He was charged with murder but the charges were stayed while he is treated at Napa Valley Hospital, a state mental institution.
Cukor died later that night of his wounds.
The lawsuit contends that Cukor did call police on an emergency number since the police department website lists 981-5911 as a number to call in an emergency. And Cukor?s tone should not have mattered.
?Describing a very threatening individual that?s acting crazy, that?s six feet four inches tall, that?s outside and won?t go away ? why would he call just to have a nice little chat with a communications person?? said Van Blois. ?If he asked calmly or he was yelling, it should make no difference. He wanted help. ?
In August, Berkeley rejected the Cukor family?s initial claim against the city, said Van Blois, paving the way for the filing of the lawsuit.

New president for B.C. Conservative Party
A Port Moody resident and former B.C. Conservative Party politician who ran in a recent byelection in the Port Moody-Coquitlam riding is now party president.
Christine Clarke was given the volunteer post after Al Siebring quit because of his increasing workload and councillor duties.
Clarke was already vice-president, having been elected to the job at the party's annual general meeting in September, and said she expects the new job to keep her very busy.
As well, she said the party is getting ready for next May's provincial election with several tours around the province by party leader John Cummins and nomination meetings in various ridings across B.C.

Overall unemployment rate holds steady at 5.8 percent
Minnesota?s construction sector added 1,200 jobs in October even as employers overall cut 8,100 jobs, the state Department of Employment and Economic Development reported Thursday.
The state?s unemployment rate stayed the same at a seasonally adjusted 5.8 percent, well below the U.S. rate of 7.9 percent.
There has been a fair amount of skepticism out of DEED about the monthly jobs numbers, which are based on a survey sample of fewer than 3,000 Minnesota employers. Just to further drive home the point, DEED has now revised September figures upward by 5,100, to 11,000 jobs gained.
In the past 12 months, Minnesota has added 34,700 jobs, an increase of 1.3 percent that is in line with the increase seen nationwide. Construction jobs in the state are up 4,400, a 4.3 percent increase since 2011.
Minnesota?s construction sector, though, still has a long way to go to recover the 50,000 jobs it lost during the Great Recession.
?Last month?s numbers are a reminder that the economic recovery on a month-to-month basis is at times uneven,? DEED Commissioner Katie Clark said in a news release.
Steve Hine, research director for DEED?s Labor Market Information Office, warned during a conference call with reporters that the October numbers reinforce concerns that Minnesota?s recovery from the Great Recession is a fragile one.
The jobs situation will likely worsen if President Barack Obama and Republicans leaders in Congress fail to reach an agreement to avert the so-called fiscal cliff ? a series of automatic tax increases and spending cuts going into effect on Jan. 1.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the national unemployment rate could shoot up to 9.1 percent by the end of 2013 if government goes over the cliff.
?It certainly raises concerns about what may happen in Minnesota if that issue isn?t dealt with,? Hine said.
Also disconcerting was Minnesota?s October loss of 5,300 jobs in professional and business services, a sector dominated by temporary help jobs. The sector has lost jobs in two of the past three months. The sector is often a ?leading indicator? of what?s to come, Hine said.
Construction remains the bright spot ? thanks in part to an apartment building boom in the Twin Cities. Residential building construction jobs are flat year-over-year in Minnesota. But specialty trades jobs ? which include building site subcontractors such as carpenters, plumbers and painters ? are up 10.7 percent over the past year. Building equipment contractor jobs are up 11.7 percent.
Meanwhile, heavy and civil engineering construction jobs are down 19.8 percent over the past year.
