BOSTON (AP) ? A Vermont nurse disfigured in a 2007 lye attack has received a new face at a Boston hospital.

Carmen Blandin Tarleton's full facial transplant at Brigham & Women's Hospital included transplanting a female donor's facial skin to Tarleton's neck, nose and lips, along with facial muscles, arteries and nerves.

Hospital officials say the 44-year-old Thetford, Vt., woman suffered burns on more than 80 percent of her body after her estranged husband attacked her.

Tarleton's sister said Wednesday she showed "great appreciation" for the gift she's been given.

The donor's family believes their loved one's spirit lives on in Tarleton.

Tarleton has undergone more than 50 surgeries. The latest took 15 hours and included a team of more than 30 medical professionals.

Tarleton once worked as a transplant nurse.

Seth MacFarlane says "no way" he would host Oscars again

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Seth MacFarlane said on Tuesday that he would not host the star-studded Academy Awards ceremony again, after TV critics panned Sunday's show.

"Family Guy" creator and star MacFarlane was asked on Twitter whether he would host the Oscars a second time after making his debut in Sunday's show, and replied: "No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though."

MacFarlane's response came after TV critics slammed the telecast, in which 40.3 million Americans saw Iran hostage thriller "Argo" take home the top prize for Best Picture.

In a night of risqu? jokes about female nudity and zingers about gays and Jews, MacFarlane, 39, poked fun at himself in an opening sketch with William Shatner and the "Star Trek" star told him he was in danger of being deemed "the worst Oscar host ever."

While some critics lashed out at MacFarlane's hosting, others placed more blame on the overall song-and-dance-heavy show, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, which ran for 3 1/2 hours.

MacFarlane's appeal among young people did though provide an 11 percent bump in the 18-49 demographic coveted by TV networks and advertisers. And overall viewer ratings were up, making for the largest Oscar audience in three years.

MacFarlane was also a hit on social media, where 13 percent of conversation across Facebook, Twitter and blogs rated him the "best host ever" according to social media research firm Fizziology.

MacFarlane, the creator and voice star of Fox network's animated shows "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," made his directorial debut on the big screen with the R-rated comedy "Ted" last year.

He is currently working on his next project - writing and directing a live action comedy film "A Million Ways to Die in the West," starring Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron.

Sending top secret information? There's an app for that ? CNN ...

By Mike Mount

Combat troops to four-star generals will soon be able to use cell phones or mobile tablets to quickly share classified information anywhere in the world.

The program soon to be rolled out by the Pentagon will allow the more than 600,000 Defense Department employees who use government-issued "smart" mobile devices to send top-secret information on those units or computers.

Until now, classified and other highly sensitive information has only been allowed to be shared by specially designated desktop systems.

Most Defense Department mobile device users peck away at Blackberries. Another 41,000 use Apple devices and a much smaller number use Android-based technology, according to statistics provided by the Pentagon.

The secure network would apply to all of those technologies.

"The application of mobile technology into global operations, integration of secure and non-secure communications, and development of portable, cloud-enabled capability will dramatically increase the number of people able to collaborate and share information rapidly," said Teri Takai, the Pentagon's chief information officer.

Mobile users range from ground troops in Afghanistan to the Joint Chiefs chairman to Pentagon policy wonks.

The motive for the Pentagon is to get a system in place as mobile technology increasingly advances.

The Pentagon eventually hopes to phase in a larger number of users and involve vendor competition to build a system that could possibly handle the agency's more than three million employees, officials said.

The initial system will allow mobile "smart" device users to run apps, e-mail and other functions securely even in remote and hostile locations.

The system will operate on commercial carrier networks that are able to handle classified data, according to Pentagon officials who briefed reporters on the plan.

Takai said the biggest challenge for the Pentagon has been to design a system that can fully leverage all of the uses of the "smart phones" in a way that allows the users to communicate securely.

"The challenge for the DOD is to balance the concern of cyber security with the need to have the capability of these devices," Takai said.

Multitasking Problem On iOS - Business Insider

As popular as Apple's iOS operating system for iPhones and iPads is, it functions largely the same as it did when it was first introduced more than six years ago.

That normally wouldn't be a big deal, but as mobile OS usage eats into normal PC OS usage, it's becoming more apparent that Apple still has a lot of work to do when it comes to productivity, content creation, and multitasking.

Kontra of Counternotions, a really smart anonymous blogger who comments on Apple design a lot, has a new post on the multitasking issue in iOS.

Here's the key paragraph that demonstrates just how difficult it is to work between multiple apps:

In iOS, this involves double-clicking the Home button, swiping in the tray to find the other app, waiting for it to (re)load fully, locating the app view necessary to copy, double-clicking the Home button, finding the previous app in the tray and waiting for it to (re)load fully to paste the previously copied material. That?s just one operation between two apps. Composing a patient review for a doctor or creating a presentation for a student can easily involve many such operations among multiple apps.

What a pain.

Kontra has a temporary solution that Apple could implement in its next version of iOS, which is expected to launch as early as this summer. Apple could add what Kontra calls a "multi-slot clipboard" that would let you copy multiple items at once before plugging them into another app. It seems like such a feature would be easy for Apple to add without confusing users. Plus it'll give Apple another full year to figure out a more robust way to multitask.

But even as Apple lags behind, some of its biggest competitors are already addressing multitasking on the touchscreen in their latest smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system, which was designed primarily for touchscreen devices, has a unique multitasking feature that lets you "snap" any app to the side of your display. It's also very easy to cycle between apps in Windows 8 by swiping your finger from the left to right side of your screen.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 and 8.0 Android tablets also let you run two apps at once in a split screen, although there are only about 20 apps that utilize that feature right now. Some of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones like the Galaxy S III let you run multiple apps at once in separate windows.

Finally, BlackBerry's new operating system, BlackBerry 10, has the best multitasking function we've ever seen on a smartphone. Swiping from the bottom to the top of the screen reveals the apps you have running in the background, making it incredibly easy to switch between them.

Yes, adding a more robust multitasking solution to iOS could alienate and confuse some people who have become familiar with the operating system over the years. Just look at all the confusion Microsoft caused with its radical new Windows 8 design.?

But if tablets are going to eventually replace regular laptops and PCs for most users, multitasking and productivity are two very important things Apple will have to expand on.

2013 Home Goals {WARNING: This is not pretty}

This is a post full of ?before? shots. Some may even gross you out. But it is my reality. And my to-do list. And just think of how awesome the ?after? shots will be :)

Oh man. I have so many projects that need to be done. They are not even ?wants?. They seriously NEED to be done. We have mildew growing behind the tiles in our only working bathroom. Who ever tiled it before we moved in did not do a good job grouting and water has gotten behind there. They are bulging and I am afraid to tear it down for fear of what we will find. The sad thing is, since it is our only finished bathroom, we have to finish the basement bathroom first so we have a bathroom we can use while the upstairs tub/shower gets fixed. Uggg. Can you say expensive? And the tub is 70+ years old!!! All the outer shiny layer has long worn off and no matter how much I scrub it, it NEVER looks clean.

old-bath-tub

Before we can do the downstairs bathroom we have to address a pipe issue in the basement. We have a hole at the top bend of our sewer line. I have a rag stuffed in there for now so the horrible smell is contained. We need to have that and some other plumbing replaced.

laundry-before-collage2

Project #1 Have a plumber help us get the pipes replaced and fixed. I love to DIY but I also know when to call in a professional :)

Project #2 Build a wall and doorway to the bathroom, tile, and install new toilet. Then DECORATE the basement bath!

bathroom-before-collage

Project#3 tear out tile in shower. Rip out 70+ year old nasty tub, replace with new tub (*wishlist= acrylic claw footed tub), re-tile shower, install new tub

Project #4 Build a clubhouse for the boys. We have promised them one for a long time but the times my hubby has been laid off has always been spring or summer. It WILL happen this year!!!

If we get to this point in the list it will be a miracle. Those are not cheap projects!!! BUT just in case we win the lottery or a long lost Uncle kicks the bucket and leaves us loads of cash??..

Project #5 Tile the laundry room, fur out the walls, add wall treatment and trim, DECORATE

Project #6 Finish the ?play room? slash ?future master suite? which includes adding insulation, a ceiling, some electrical, furring the walls in places, boxing in duct work, adding two windows, and carpet. This one will be quite the challenge but will add so much livable square footage to our tiny home.

basement-before-collage

Project#7 Finish the fence in the backyard. My husband got laid off after we got one side done. Now that he has a job again I would love to be able to finish the other side and get them both stained so they match.

There are LOADS more things I would like to get done but it all comes down to money.? I will be super lucky to get even a portion of this list done. Maybe if we can get these things done 2014 can be the ?year of the attic?.

What are your home goals for 2013? I would love to hear!

(AP) ? After ducking comment for days, Sen. Robert Menendez is forcefully denying allegations he engaged with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, calling the claims false "smears."

Menendez told reporters on Monday that he had done nothing wrong. His voice rose with anger as he described "anonymous, nameless, faceless individuals" who he said have driven false stories into the mainstream media.

"That's what they've done successfully," he said his first public remarks since the allegations began to spread on Wednesday. "The bottom line is all of those smears are absolutely false."

Menendez's public denial came after the FBI conducted a search of the West Palm Beach offices of a Florida doctor who also was the senator's biggest political donor in his re-election campaign last year. A week before the November election, The Daily Caller, a conservative website, reported that Menendez had used a business jet owned by Dr. Salomon Melgen to fly to the Dominican Republican for trysts with prostitutes. None of the allegations have been substantiated. It is unclear whether the FBI raid of Melgen's office was related to Menendez.

The reports have dogged Menendez, 59, as he has assumed the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, succeeding former Sen. John Kerry, who resigned last week to become secretary of state. The Senate Ethics Committee is investigating the case.

Separately on Monday, a prominent lawyer in the Dominican Republic denied claims that he hosted outings involving Menendez and prostitutes on his yacht. Attorney Vinicio Castillo Seman said in Santo Domingo that he would seek a criminal investigation into the source of the reports, which he called "absurd."

Castillo, the son of a presidential adviser and the brother of a member of the Dominican Republic Congress, said he has known Menendez for about 15 years but has never seen him with a prostitute. Prostitution is legal in the Caribbean country.

"I have never seen him behave in any way that was not impeccable and dignified," Castillo said.

While repeatedly denying any meetings with prostitutes, Menendez did acknowledge to reporters that he flew on Melgen's private plane and failed, initially, to properly pay for trips. He told reporters he reimbursed some $58,500 from his personal funds after it "came to my attention" and said it was unfortunate that the trips "fell through the cracks."

"I was in a big travel schedule in 2010 as the chairman of the DSCC" ? the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ? "plus my own campaign getting ready for the election cycle," Menendez said.

Menendez's office said last week that the senator had reimbursed Melgen on Jan. 4. His office said Menendez's reimbursement was for the full cost of two flights on Melgen's plane to the Dominican Republic for personal trips in 2010.

Menendez took a third flight ? in May 2010 ? on Melgen's plane for a DSCC fundraiser. The trip was reported to the Federal Election Commission as a $5,400 expenditure by the DSCC for the use of Melgen's plane.

Melgen is a native of the Dominican Republic but has lived in the U.S. since 1980, while Menendez is of Cuban-American descent. He is divorced and has two children. Menendez's office has said Melgen has been a friend and supporter for many years.

Some New Jersey Republicans filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee last fall after The Daily Caller's initial report that Menendez had flown on Melgen's private plane to the Dominican Republic to engage with prostitutes. In response, Menendez's staffers searched records for trips by the senator and found the two additional trips that hadn't been reimbursed.

In 2012, Melgen's practice gave $700,000 to Majority PAC, a super political action committee set up to fund Democratic candidates for Senate. Aided by Melgen's donation, the super PAC became the largest outside political committee contributing to Menendez's re-election, spending more than $582,000 on the senator's behalf, according to an analysis of federal election records.

New study sheds light on cellular reprogramming

Mature cells can be reprogrammed to pluripotency and thus regain the ability to divide and differentiate into specialized cell types. Although these so-called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) represent a milestone in stem cell research, many of the biochemical processes that underlie reprogramming are still not understood. Scientists from the EMBL Hamburg and from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Mnster, Germany now shed new light on this process. In a study published today in Nature Cell Biology, the scientists describe important details about the structure of the transcription factor Oct4, known to play a crucial role in the reprogramming of terminally differentiated cells. The study broadens the knowledge about the reprogramming of cells and may pave the way for medical applications in the field of regenerative medicine and drug discovery.

The transcription factor Oct4 is a protein that binds to DNA and controls the genes involved in reprogramming the cells. The team at EMBL Hamburg has now been able to resolve the crystal structure of Oct4 using high-intensity X-ray beams. In particular, their analysis focused on a previously unexplored linker sequence between two DNA binding elements of the protein. "The uniqueness of the linker has caught our attention for more than a decade and, thus, we are extremely pleased to see it for the first time, helping us rationalize its function in reprogramming cells to pluripotency" says Matthias Wilmanns who led the work in Hamburg.

The authors suggest that the linker recruits key partners to the Oct4 target genes, without whom the process of reprogramming cannot be completed. Colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine led by Hans Schler supported these findings with studies on the modifications of the linker. They showed that changes in the sequence of the linker led to the loss of Oct4's reprogramming activity, and that a single residue mutation has major effects on the protein interface and thus affects the recruiting of key partners.

"Our work shows how unique the Oct4 interface is and how crucial it is for reprogramming to pluripotency. These are vital steps forward in our understanding of cell reprogramming and could lead us to new applications in the fields of drug discovery and tissue engineering" said Hans Schler. Ongoing research will help determine an integrated picture on how Oct4 acts in the context of many other protein components in stem cell pluripotency.

HBT: Newspaper says A-Rod is scared, paranoid

I generally have no problem with anonymous source reporting. Anonymous sources often make it possible for reporters to get stories they otherwise wouldn?t get. The entire trade rumor circuit which, no matter what you think about it, is extremely popular among readers, is based on it. ?Bigger, important news often hinges on?anonymity because people are sharing information which could get them fired. Or worse. ?It?s a necessary part of journalism and anyone who dismisses a story merely because it?s sourced anonymously is being foolish.

That said, there are limits to what can and can?t be sourced anonymously. For example, you have to give the reader some sense of what kind of source the person is so as to give them at least some confidence that the information you?re imparting is legitimate as opposed to 100% pure, unadulterated baloney.

For example, ?a government source? is more useful than merely saying ?a source.? A ?source who has examined the documents/microfilm/offer/whatever? is useful. A ?source close to [notable person]? is a bit more vague, but it?s something. ?All of it beats saying ?a source.?

In contrast, if your anonymous source seems impossible ? like, there?s no?immediately?plausible person saying x, y, z who would know, that?s a big problem. If your story makes a savvy reader focus way more on where the information could possibly be coming from than the information itself, that?s likewise a problem.

With that I give you the latest from Daily News. A paper which has, thus far, embarrassed itself repeatedly since last Tuesday?s revelations about the A-Rod/Biogenesis story:

Alex Rodriguez?is taking his wildest swing yet in his fight against steroid allegations: The Yankees and MLB are conspiring to push him out of the game.?Sources say the embattled Yankee star is ?scared? that bigger forces are at work to try to discredit him and sink his career ???He?s scared, because he thinks this is so unbelievably false, and he?s wondering who could be behind this ? He thinks something could be going on larger than anyone might think.?

The person quoted thusly is repeatedly identified as ?a source.? There is no sense if this is a friend of A-Rod?s, a business associate or anything. There is no information imparted which even suggests to the reader that the source might have some access and insight into A-Rod?s psyche. This could just as easily be a hot dog vendor speculating about what A-Rod might feel as it could be a confidant.

And in this story, from this source, that truly matters. It matters because the information here paints A-Rod in a negative (indeed paranoid) light. This after a week?s worth of the Daily News more or less transcribing highly implausible ?the Yankees are going to dump A-Rod? talking points from the Yankees front office with almost zero critical analysis at all. And, of course, a decade?s worth of trying to slam and humiliate Rodriguez at every possible opportunity.

In short, the Daily News has done nothing to warrant the benefit of the doubt here. Its sources are incredibly thin. This latest story conveniently serves to bolster the Daily News? ?A-Rod is done as a Yankee? narrative. Given the peculiarly inside vibe to this ? and the fact that no one truly close to A-Rod would be a likely Daily News source give its treatment of him over the years ? it is damn nigh impossible to imagine who on Earth could be the Daily News? ?source.?

But is it true? I suppose the beauty of the way this story is written is that we have no way of knowing and no way of checking. ?But therein also likes the very best reason to question this story coming from this outlet.

The Internet Has Become The Biggest Drug Dealer : Easy Health ...

the-internet-has-become-the-biggest-drug-dealer_300

Want a cheap high for Saturday night that might kill you? The Internet has become a key player in supplying drug abusers with the medications that are sending people to hospitals in record numbers.

Online pharmacies that send you medication without a prescription are driving a rapid increase in drug abuse, according to investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the University of Southern California (USC). In a nationwide survey, they found that for every 10 percent increase in the availability of high-speed Internet service, hospital admissions for drug abuse climbed 1 percent.

?We know we face a growing problem with prescription drug abuse in the United States. One need only look at statistics for college campuses, where prescription drugs are fast replacing illegal substances, to see the magnitude of the problem,? says researcher Dana Goldman, Ph.D., director of the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at USC. ?Our findings suggest that Internet growth may partly explain the increase in prescription drug abuse, since it is well known that these drugs are easily available online.?

Narcotic painkillers have become the most problematic medications followed by anti-anxiety drugs, stimulants and sedatives.

Underwater Hull Cleaning ? It's Harder Than It Looks | South Florida ...

Not long ago, I was talking to a professional diver and he explained that he and his buddies might occasionally go down to the local marina to clean the bottom of boats, mostly for beer money if you will, or rather that was the joke in the conversation. After all, a professional diver makes decent money and hardly needs anymore time in the water or work such as hull cleaning of the proverbial rich person's yacht you see. Nevertheless, we discussed the difficulty in cleaning hulls in the water.

Monogamous birds read partner's food desires

Feb. 4, 2013 ? New research shows that male Eurasian Jays in committed relationships are able to share food with their female partner according to her current desire.

The behaviour suggests the potential for 'state-attribution' in these birds -- the ability to recognise and understand the internal life and psychological states of others.

The research was carried out in Professor Nicola Clayton's Comparative Cognition lab at Cambridge University's Department of Psychology, and is published February 4 in the journal PNAS.

Researchers tested mated jays and separated males from females. The females were fed one particular larvae, either wax moth or mealworm -- a treat for the birds, like chocolates -- allowing the males to observe from an adjacent compartment through a transparent window.

Once the pairs were reintroduced and the option of both larvae was presented, the males would choose to feed their partner the other type of larvae, to which she hadn't previously had access -- a change in diet welcomed by the female.

Through different tests using variations on food and visual access to the females during feeding, the researchers show that the males needed to actually see the females eating enough of and become sated by one type of larvae -- called 'specific satiety' -- to know to offer them the other type once reunited.

This demonstrates that the males' sharing pattern was not a response to their partner's behaviour indicating her preference but a response to the change in her internal state.

"Our results raise the possibility that these birds may be capable of ascribing desire to their mates -- acknowledging an 'internal life' in others like that of their own," said Ljerka Ostojic, who led the research.

"Ascribing internal states to other individuals requires the basic understanding that others are distinct from the self and others' internal states are independent from, and differ from, one's own.

When there was no opportunity to feed the female, males chose between the two foods according to their own desires. Only when they could share with the female did they disengage from their own desires and select food the female wanted.

The researchers believe that this ability to respond to another's internal state in a cooperative situation might be important for species living in long-term relationships. Food-sharing is an important courtship behaviour for the Jays -- so the ability to determine which food is currently desired by his partner might increase the male's value as a mate.

"A comparison might be a man giving his wife chocolates. The giving and receiving of chocolates is an important 'pair-bonding' ritual -- but, a man that makes sure he gives his wife the chocolates she currently really wants will improve his bond with her much more effectively -- getting in the good books, and proving himself a better life partner."

Best Stock Market Gamble?Small-Cap Techs or U.S.-Listed ...

Monday, February 4th, 2013
By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Best Stock Market GambleSome of the most attractive opportunities right now in this stock market are in U.S.-listed Chinese stocks. If you like the buy low/sell high strategy, you have lots of choice among Chinese stocks?many of these companies are bouncing off their 52-week and all-time lows.

Of course, there?s a reason why so many Chinese stocks have been dumped on the stock market: business conditions worsened, and investors lost confidence in the entire group. Aside from the largest companies, institutional investors have abandoned smaller Chinese stocks. Naturally, this is a good place to be bottom-fishing in the stock market.

One company that I think is a standout turnaround opportunity is China Ceramics Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ/CCCL). This company makes ceramic tiles in China and sells them to the residential and commercial markets. Only about seven percent of the company?s products are exported overseas, and the company?s management recently signed a deal to become a strategic supplier to China?s largest real estate contractor. Here is China Ceramics? stock chart:

CCCL China Ceramics Co.Ltd. Nasdaq stock market chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

On the stock market, China Ceramics has performed like most Chinese stocks?it?s been going down for the last two years, right along with the ?engineered? slowdown in the Chinese real estate market. According to the company, its 2012 third-quarter revenues fell to $62.1 million, down from $63.4 million. Average selling prices, however, grew by 14%. Earnings in the third quarter of 2012 were $11.7 million, down from $11.8 million in the comparative quarter. Management previously forecasted a slowdown in business and a reduction in its backlog, which will result in a substantial decline in fourth-quarter revenues.

Like a lot of Chinese stocks these days, China Ceramics recently bounced off its low; if you?re a speculator, this is a company worth keeping your eye on. Any acceleration in the Chinese real estate market will improve this company?s numbers. This is one of the Chinese stocks that looks ?real? to me.

Another trend developing in the stock market is the strength in smaller, domestic technology stocks. I like a few large-cap technology stocks, Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ/ORCL) being one, but I also like several small-cap technology stocks with improving financial results.

One of these small-cap tech stocks is Support.com, Inc. (NASDAQ/SPRT). Based in Redwood City, CA, this small but growing company sells technology services to consumers and small businesses. These are products designed to help customers protect their computers, clean up installed software and hardware, and generally optimize personal computers and tablets. The company?s services are provided directly through its web site and through channel parts, like broadband service providers, retailers, and other technology companies. Support.com?s stock chart is below:

SPRT Support.com, Nasdaq stock market chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

The company doesn?t report its fourth-quarter numbers until mid-February, and I am very much looking forward to the results. In its third quarter of 2012, Support.com?s revenues grew to $18.2 million from $12.4 million, with a slight net loss.

With so much carnage on the stock market among U.S.-listed Chinese stocks and a lack of confidence in their numbers, I?d be inclined to stick with domestic small-cap businesses for stock market speculating. The biggest turnaround potential is with Chinese stocks; but then again, so is the biggest risk.

Renewed strength in small-cap stocks is a big deal, as it shows that individuals and small businesses are spending on technology again. I think this trend has staying power; on the stock market, Support.com will jump if its numbers are decent.

There is still a great deal of uncertainty in the stock market today, and trading action is fragile. I don?t know how the stock market will end up this year, but we?ve had a great start. Chinese stocks are bouncing off their lows, but the group is very high-risk. My best guess is to sell in May and go away, as the saying goes. The fourth quarter of 2013 is just too far away.

Egypt 'bodyguards' take stand against sex assault

In this Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 photo, Tahrir Bodyguard volunteers gather in Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt during a Friday protest, one week after the square was the site of attacks on more than 25 women on the second anniversary of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak. On Friday, over a dozen members fanned out in the central square, emblematic of what many still consider an ongoing revolution, to take up positions among thousands of demonstrators protesting President Mohammed Morsi?s rule. Wearing neon vests and hardhats, the group, which calls itself Tahrir Bodyguard, aims to deter potential assailants and evacuate women under assault by crowds in a country where sexual harassment is a reality of daily life. (AP Photo/Brian Rohan)

CAIRO (AP) ? With bright neon vests and hardhats gleaming at dusk, a dozen Egyptian volunteers fanned out through Cairo's crowded Tahrir Square. Their project: end a surge in sexual assaults on women that activists say has become the darkest stain on the country's opposition street movement.

Patrolling on Friday, the men and women have joined Tahrir Bodyguard ? one of several informal groups that have arisen to protect female demonstrators after women were stripped, groped and assaulted in a string of attacks this past year. Over the past week alone, while mass protests filled city squares around the country, over two dozen new sexual attacks have been reported ? a wave activists call the worst in years.

Soraya Bahgat said she founded the group using social media after seeing television footage last November of a mob of men attacking a woman and tearing off her clothes. She had been on the way to a demonstration at Tahrir herself, but instead stayed in, gripped with fear.

"It was sickening. They were dragging her through the street," said the 29-year-old, who works as a human resources manager. "I couldn't imagine something so horrific, and something that fundamentally would keep women from exercising their right to assembly like anyone else. No one should be prevented from demonstrating."

Such is the concern that the United Nations on Thursday demanded authorities to act to bring perpetrators to justice, saying it had reports of 25 sexual assaults on women in Tahrir rallies over the past week. Another Egyptian organization that also patrols the square, Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault, reported 19 incidents on one day alone. It was January 25th ? the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Extraordinary violence has been used in some of the attacks. Human rights campaigner Amnesty International says that some meet the definition of rape, including penetration with fingers and sharp objects. Frequently, fights with knives and blunt weapons break out when people try to stop the attacks, blurring the lines between those helping and the perpetrators.

"Testimonies from victims and those attempting to save them paint a frightening picture: tens if not hundreds of men surrounding the victims with countless hands tearing-off clothes and veils, unzipping trousers and groping breasts, nipples and backsides," Amnesty's Egypt researcher Diana Eltahawy wrote in a blog post on Friday.

The activists say they can expect little help from the police, who rarely intervene in such cases and who they accuse of failing to properly investigate allegations. Uniforms are almost never seen at Tahrir during demonstrations except at the fringes, where riot police regularly clash with rock-throwing youths.

Sexual harassment in Egypt is not a new phenomenon. Women on the streets frequently are subjected to everything from stares to cat-calls and attempts to grab them. In previous years, there were instances of young men ganging up to grope girls in parks or on main boulevards during public holidays when large crowds are on the street.

The trend however has worsened since the 2011 uprising, which saw a general collapse in security and rise in crime after the fall of Mubarak. This past June, as women marched through Tahrir demanding an end to harassment, a crowd assaulted them, overwhelming their male guardians and molesting several of the female marchers. And in October during Eid al-Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, activists trying to protect women were harassed themselves, as hordes of all-male onlookers shouted taunts and blew air horns at them.

Experts, activists and media have attributed the harassment to a wide range of possible factors. Some blame widespread unemployment or underemployment among youth. Others cite an attitude in the conservative nation that women should not be out in public and thus those who are fair game. Activists have speculated that some attacks are planned, aiming to discredit the protesters or to dissuade women from joining them.

The patrols, which aim to deter potential assailants and evacuate women under assault, have prompted a backlash from harassers.

"We've had people beaten up, and in one instance a crowd ? some of whom were carrying knives ? tried to break into one of our locations," said Hussein ElShafei of Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault. "Threats are a regular occurrence."

In Tahrir on Friday, the neon-vested team said they had only had to make three interventions during the day's protest, which they attributed to their high visibility and a smaller turnout in the square than usual. With other groups present, including the one ElShafei works for, dozens of volunteers could be seen in the crowds. Violence that night was concentrated on the other side of the city, where thousands of protesters denouncing the president marched on his palace and clashed with security forces firing tear gas and water cannons.

It was the eighth day of the country's latest wave of political violence. Around 60 people have been killed in protests, rioting and clashes over the past week, the worst period of crisis since the fall of Mubarak. Observers say the protests are taking a dangerous turn as rival groups supporting and opposing Morsi's Islamist backers have taken matters into their own hands.

"I think people are getting more violent. It's been two years now and they are battle hardened," said Mohammed Osama, a 35-year-old computer engineer and black belt in judo who said he joined the bodyguard group after being slashed with a knife in street violence in his hometown of Alexandria. He said that after experiencing violence himself, he wanted to do something to prevent it from striking others.

"Individual efforts aren't enough ? organization is needed. And it's the honorable thing to do," he said in measured tones, a scar visible under his eye.

As for the perpetrators of the attacks, he described them as a "social disease."

"Sometimes attacks are organized, other times it's people profiting from chaos on the streets, said Osama. "Ignorance and poverty is part of the problem, but for those who seek to victimize others, they now have another thing coming."

(AP) ? Furry little Punxsutawney (puhnk-suh-TAW'-nee) Phil is ready to make his annual appearance out of Gobbler's Knob in west-central Pennsylvania.

Groundhog Day is Saturday, and the community is holding its welcome-back bash for the famous winter-weather prognosticator ? the so-called seer of seers and sage of sages.

Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last six more weeks. No shadow means an early spring.

Phil's got company. Groundhogs in Atlanta, New York, and Ontario also make predictions.

But Punxsutawney partisans say Phil is the original and the best. The 1993 movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray brought the Pennsylvania rodent even more notoriety.

Organizers say about 20,000 people are expected this weekend, a larger-than-normal crowd because Groundhog Day falls on a weekend this year.

Kamal Haasan, movie politics, and Vishwaroopam

Kamal Hassan, the super star of the south, is right now facing trouble in respect of the release of his latest film, Vishwaroopam, which was cleared by the Censor Board for release on January 25 but which was banned by the Tamil Nadu government following protests by certain sections of the society, who alleged that the film showed Muslims in bad light. The Censor Board's verdict cannot be challenged by any state government.

But it seems that the state government took the plea that the release of the film may affect the law and order situation in the state. In the past on similar grounds when a movie was banned by a state government the Supreme Court ordered the release of the film. Those commentators, who smell politics in any such decision taken, especially in a state having a former film star as Chief Minister, seem to think that the Jayalalitha government has deliberately banned the film so as to woo the Muslim vote bank in the state.

Interestingly enough, the Madras High Court, which had stayed the release of the film in connection with another case, vacated the stay order and the film was released on Tuesday. But on fresh representation from the state government, the court reimposed the ban and will give its final verdict on February 6. Till then Kamal Hasaan will postpone going to the Supreme Court. He has agreed to make certain cuts and Muslim critics are believed to have arrived at a settlement with the producer.

Earlier, so dejected was the film star that during a press conference, he said that he would leave the country if he fails to get justice over his controversial film Vishwaroopam. Haasan said, "I wonder how one movie could rock a nation's unity. I shall wait for the judgment but after this I will have to seek a secular state for a house. I have pledged all what I have and if the film doesn't release, I will end up suffering a huge loss. Even if I become shelter less, I know there are people who will help me. From Kashmir to Kerala, I have a number of homes to call my own. But despite all that, if I am left with no place to stay, then I will have no choice but to leave the country. But nothing can ever change the fact that I am an Indian," he said, reported The Times of India.

Kamal Haasan added that, "My father believed in humanity above all faith and had taught me not to hurt anyone's sentiments. I don't follow any religion, for I too believe in humanity. But I will certainly not let anyone take me for granted."

It is amazing why the Censor Board's certificate is being flouted. Way back in the 1960s, Mr. Morarji Desai was furious when told about some objectionable scenes in Raj Kapoor's Jis desh mein Ganga behti hai. He wanted to have those scenes deleted or banned. But he was told that since the censor board had passed the film, he could do just nothing in the matter till six months after which an application could be given for a review of the movie by the Censor Board. By then the film had celebrated its silver jubilees in several cities. But after six months, the film was again re-viewed by the censors and the objectionable scenes modified. Morarji was certainly more powerful than Jayalalttha. But those times were different. Politicians and ministers did not go out of the way to give vent to their fury over something they could not mandatorily challenge.

Jared Bernstein: January Jobs Report: First Impressions

Payrolls were up by 157,000 and the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9 percent in January, according to today's release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Revisions to the payroll survey added 127,000 jobs to the counts for November (up 247K) and December (196K) such that over the past three months, payrolls were up an average of 200,000 per month, compared with about 150,000 over the three prior months. Revisions for the year 2012 show that the job market added about 335,000 more jobs than in the pre-revised data. Whether this acceleration sticks in coming months bears close watching.

The better jobs performance in the last quarter of 2012 goes against the sharp slowdown in GDP growth as reported earlier this week (down 0.1 percent). I expect that GDP figure will be revised up in forthcoming reports.

Unemployment remains around 8 percent, and, in fact, has been in a range from 7.8 percent to 8.2 percent since March of last year. Average hourly earnings were up 2.1 percent over past year, a bit ahead of inflation, so real wages are up a bit. The share of the unemployed who are "long-termers" -- jobless for at least half-a-year -- has also come down a bit to about 38 percent in January; it was 43 percent a year ago.

On the other hand, the weekly earnings of middle- and lower-wage workers (blue collar in manufacturing; non-managers in services) are up only 1.2 percent over the past year, before accounting for inflation. The difference in wage trends between the average and this less well-off group suggests that higher wage workers may be getting ahead more quickly than middle- and lower-wage workers.

The retail sector added 33,000 jobs and construction was up 28,000 in January and 30,000 in December. Since reaching their low point in early 2011, jobs in construction have bounced back and are up almost 300,000 since then, with 80,000 of those jobs added over the past three months. Some of this may have to do with repairing the damage from hurricane Sandy. In a continuation of a longer-term trend, government employment was down 9,000 driven by losses at the federal and local levels.

In sum, the job market did a bit better than we thought last year, especially towards the end of the year, but the jobless rate remains stuck around 8 percent. Paychecks are slightly ahead of inflation on average, but not so for workers in lower paid occupations. Revised data show slightly faster job growth than we thought last year, but slower GPD growth and the threat of across the board government spending cuts to the tune of $85 billion starting in March could undermine even the slow progress we're making.

What to do about millions of undocumented immigrants has been?discussed at length?in government and the media. But legal immigrants, who say they're spending countless hours and thousands of dollars to do it right, want reform to help their struggle, too.
